Every Wednesday, we do a "round-up" post of some of our favorite things in Southwest Michigan. Our Wednesday posts will feature things to do, see, eat, and more in Michigan's Great Southwest!

Read local? Absolutely! We asked Lorraine, Kat, and Stephanie to give us some recommendations for books with a local connection. They had some great suggestions for supporting our Michigan authors.

Kat Boyer, the Interim Director at the Benton Harbor Public Library, Stephanie Masin, the Library Director at the St. Joseph/Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library, and Lorraine Valk, the Managing Member of Parable Christian Store of St. Joseph all shared their recommended reads with us. Here’s what they suggest!

Detroit Anthology, edited by Anna Clark
Dani’s Last Dance, by Glenda Head
The Vampire Academy Series, by Richelle Mead

Detroit Anthology

edited by Anna Clark

Stephanie Masin, the Library Director at the St. Joseph/Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library, says:

As editor Anna Clark writes in the introduction to Detroit Anthology, “These are the stories we tell each other over late nights at the pub and long afternoons on the porch. We share them in coffee shops, at church social hours, in living rooms, and while waiting for the bus. These are stories full of nodding asides and knowing laughs. These are stories addressed to the rhetorical “you” — with the ratcheted up language that comes with it — and these are stories that took real legwork to investigate. … You will not find “positive” stories about Detroit in this collection, or “negative” ones. But you will find true stories.” Detroit Anthology offers from-the-heart and on-the-ground views of life in America's Motor City. Featuring essays, photographs, art, and poetry by Grace Lee Boggs, John Carlisle, Desiree Cooper, dream hampton, Steve Hughes, Jamaal May, Tracie McMillan, Marsha Music, Shaka Senghor, Thomas J. Sugrue, and many others.

Anna Clark, the author, grew up in St. Joseph, graduated from the University of Michigan and Warren Wilson College’s MFA Program for Writers and is now a freelance journalist in Detroit.
