‘Tis the season for hop harvest! Fall means harvest season for brewers, and a whole new flavor palate to explore. We asked Round Barn Brewery, Silver Harbor Brewing, and Cultivate Brewing about their fall choices.
…and before you ask, there’s no pumpkin beer here.
Cultivate Brewing in Berrien Springs
HARVEST ALE-American IPA
from Round Barn Brewery in Baroda, MI
Harvest Ale is created each fall from Nugget and Cascade hops grown on the Round Barn Estate. Nicole Birmingham-Moersch shared the evolution of the Harvest Ale one ingredient at a time, relying on “favorable weather and good vibes” for the high quality harvest and subsequent magic. Brewed by Chris Noel, Round Barn Brewery’s 2016 Harvest Ale takes on a lighter color and body to accentuate the hypnotic piney and citrus aromas characteristic of the Michigan-grown hops. This is a hoppy, bitter, and crisp beer has a traditional aroma of American hops with scents of stone fruits and fresh bread.
DAS GUTE ZEUG
from Silver Harbor Brewing in St. Joseph, MI
Christian Cook, the head brewer for Silver Harbor Brewing, is excited about the young brewery’s new releases. On September 17th, look for “Das Gute Zeug” (translated to “The Good Stuff”). Commemorating the beginning of Oktoberfest in Munich, the beer is described as malty, caramel, and clean. Christian says “…this beer is true to fall; its light bodied drinkability paired with complex malty flavors, transitions you from the light beers of summer to the full beers of winter.” Silver Harbor promises to leave you saying “That’s Good Stuff!”.
HARVEST-Wet Hop Ale
from Cultivate Brewing in Berrien Springs, MI
“That beautiful delicate fresh hop aroma that only comes once a year...”
Cultivate Brewing recommends their Harvest beer, a wet hop ale, for fall drinking. Named after the bounty of the season, the fresh, seasonal, and local beer was brewed by Head Brewer Hannah Lee, along with Justin Bowman and Tom Fischl. Boasting local hops, the brewers encourage you to look for the floral and herbal qualities, along with citrus notes.
