October is upon us, leaves are in the air, and we’re ready for Halloween fun! Check out our guide for all things Halloween, with trick-or-treating, family festivals, fun for kids, theater and tours, and somethings for the grownup ghouls, too!
We’re ready for a spooktacular trick-or-treat in the Benton Harbor Arts District on Halloween! On Monday, October 31st, little goblins and ghouls can visit galleries, studios, restaurants and shops for treats. The event, generously sponsored by Holt Bosse, runs from 4:30-6:00pm. Downtown St. Joseph offers trick-or-treating on Halloween, too. From 4:30-6:00 (just before the city trick or treat!) downtown merchants will be ready to hand out treats…and maybe a few tricks!
If Halloween is a little busy, you can check out the Trunk-A-Palooza at the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA on Saturday, October 22nd! This event, which includes a trunk-or-treat, apple crafts, inflatables, and face painting is free to the community, and runs from 3:00-5:30.
Halloween weekend kicks off on Friday, October 28th at the Sarett Nature Center! From 6:30-8:30pm, families can walk the lighted trail, discovering wild creatures and fun activities. Bring a flashlight! There is a dark trail for the adventurous Halloween ethusiasts; there’s also snacks and crafts indoors. It’s $5 per person. Please call (269)-927-4832 to register.
For more Halloween exploring in the great outdoors, Fernwood Botanical Garden offers trick-or-treating in their gardens on Saturday, October 29th from 6:00-8:00pm. Costumes are encouraged, and the free event offers spooky stories, creepy crafts, and fun for the whole family. Donations are accepted!
Four-legged friends don’t have to miss out on spooky fun when head over to North Pier Brewing's Howl-O-Ween! On Sunday, October 30th from 2:30-5:30pm, the kid-friendly “dogtoberfest” celebration will host a costume contest for dogs, live music, a photo booth, awesome beer, and dog walkers for $1. It’s $10 per person or $20 per family to enter, and proceeds benefit Healing Paws Therapy Dogs.
FUN FOR KIDS
Barney’s Halloween Party is coming to the Curious Kid’s Museum! The littlest ghouls are invited on Wednesday, October 19th at 10:30am for not-too-scary storytime and fun, including stuffing a scarecrow! This event is free with museum admission or membership.
The train rides at Eden Springs Park at House of David are always awesome, and even better with a spooktacular makeover for Halloween! For just $3 per ride, you can explore the decorated grounds on a historic miniature train. Rides are available October 15th and 16th, 22nd and 23rd, and 29th and 30th. They’ll run on Saturdays from 5:00-9:00pm, and Sundays from 5:00-8:00pm. Check out the events here, too!
Benton Harbor Library is hosting literary fun for kids with their Halloween parties! Join them on Saturday October 29th for creepy fun. Kids 6th grade and younger are invited from 11:30-1:00, and teens 7th grade and up are invited from 1:00-2:30.
THEATER AND TOURS
For historic Halloween fun, the Heritage Museum, in partnership with the History Center at Courthouse Square, is hosting haunted walking tours of downtown St. Joseph and the city cemetery! Once you walk the streets of St. Joseph with the tour guides, hearing tales of ghostly sightings and unexplainable sounds, you’ll never look at State Street the same way again. These tours are offered on Saturday, October 15th; space is extremely limited, so make sure to call the Heritage Museum at (269) 983-1191 to reserve your spot!
There’s awesome and seasonally spooky live theater coming to Michigan’s Great Southwest, too! Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Nile comes to the Mendel Center on October 21st, and Twin City Players is running Something Wicked This Way Comes from October 26th-30th.
12 Corner Vineyards is hosting a Halloween themed wine and paint! The Sandpaper Social with Turquoise Top Hat will include step-by-step instructions for creative and creepy Halloween signs, making sure your home is ready for the holiday. Cost is $30, and includes all materials and a glass of wine or wine tasting. You can register at the Turquoise Top Hat website.
For more wine fun, head over to Round Barn for the HalloWine Festival! Featuring cocktails like Witch’s Brew (along with your other Round Barn favorites), this fantastically fun bash includes live music with the Rebecca Anne Band and costumes. Festivities are Saturday, October 29th from 1:00-7:00pm!
If boos and brews are more your style, the Weko Beach Brewer’s Fest is also Saturday, October 29th! The tasting event is not too terrifying…featuring brews by Cultivate, the Livery, North Pier, Round Barn, Silver Harbor, and Watermark Brewing (among others). Tickets are available here; the cost is $25 and includes 15 tasting tickets.
