It’s the season for gatherings and celebration, and nothing improves that like wine! Here’s some recommendations from our local wineries for vino sure to please at a party, as a gift, or just enjoying this season!
Dave Miller, owner and winemaker at the Lawton vineyard, shared some of his favorite holidays wines you can pick up at their downtown St. Joseph storefront.
“Our sparkling wine - Effervescence - is always perfect to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. It is fermented in the bottle to give lots of complexity and tiny bubbles - the traditional way to make sparkling wine (we can't say "Champagne" unless it's from Champagne region in France).
The second is our holiday spiced wine or mulled wine. We use Red Expression and spices we put together ourselves to create a warm, welcoming holiday treat. Nothing says "holidays" like warm, spiced wine - Yum!”
Suzanne Walton from the Baroda winery shared a Reisling and a Pinot Noir perfect for any palate, or serious wine fans.
"Our 2015 Dablon Riesling is the perfect gift for the one on your list you’re not quite sure what to get. Off dry with just .8% residual sugar, this wine is one that just about anyone can get along with. Peach on the noise and a tantalizing honeysuckle mouthfeel make for a great sipping wine and also pairs perfectly with ham or turkey dinners on Christmas. Our best Riesling yet, this wine is a staff favorite!
An intense, bold, dry red, our 2013 Dablon Pinot Noir is for the most serious lovers of dry red wine. Spicy green pepper on the nose opens to intense cherry and clove followed by a smooth, tannic fruit leather finish. For the entire month of December, 10% of all sales of this wine will be given to The Soup Kitchen of Benton Harbor."
Lauren Kniebes, co-owner of the downtown St. Joseph winery, shared her holiday favorites with us.
“Our Cranberry wine is perfect for the holiday season! It can be paired with a variety of foods whether it be ham at Christmas dinner or fruitcake for dessert. Try it heated with mulling spices to warm you up this winter!
Demi-Plié, our semi-dry red, is a go-to gift wine. If you’re uncertain what type of wine those on your list drink, this is a safe bet! The wine starts off sweeter, but finishes dry so it will please virtually any wine drinker!”
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted from 100% estate grown grapes from some of the oldest commercial Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the state of Michigan. The food friendly wine with subtle oak, and dark fruit flavors, layered threads of vanilla makes this Cab the perfect gift for family and friends.
Lemon Creek Winery’s dry Seyval Blanc has crisp, lightly oaked flavors with citrus aromas upfront, and a soft, long-lasting finish. An excellent wine for an excellent price at just $10 per bottle!
As a bonus, Lemon Creek Winery is offering free bottle gift wrapping with any wine purchases now through the end of December!
Irresistible Red from Gravity Winery is an awesome Chambourcin and Chancellor blend, aged in stainless steel. It’s deep red in color with vibrant fruity flavors and soft on the palate. Perfect for a gift that showcases Michigan wine, or for mulling at a holiday party.
For a taste of summer in the wintertime, Gravity Winery also recommends their Blueberry wine. It’s wonderful to share around the table, with fruity flavors and a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg. At just $12 per bottle, it’s a unique gift at an awesome price!
Connie Langer from the Benton Harbor vineyard shared her holiday recommendations with us. 12 Corners has tasting rooms at their vineyard, and in Grand Haven and South Haven.
"The South Pier Niagara White is a sweet white wine. This 100% estate wine is aromatic, recalling drives through the country in September when that scent of grapes fills the air. Niagara and Concord grapes are still the most heavily planted grapes in the state, so most natives of Michigan are familiar with this scent. The St. Joe lighthouse is also on the label of it. This is really a good collaboration of the twin cities, with the iconic St. Joe Lighthouse on the label and 100% Benton Harbor soil grapes.
For reds, I picked our 2013 Merlot. It is great Merlot for the area, 100% estate grown, aged in American oak for 12 months. The black cherry and black raspberry taste in it takes you back to summertime, but yet it has a warming effect when drank so it is great for winter."
