WHO WE ARE:
MI-JOURNEY fills a unique and important role within the mental health community in Berrien County by providing something that clinical services cannot: empowerment.
Because we're entirely run by people with mental illnesses, we not only empower ourselves and others towards recovery, but we use our hard-won insights to develop more effective ways to facilitate recovery.
We have seen (and experienced ourselves) that when people make their own choices and follow through on those choices, they consistently do better. For this reason, we're strong believers in the concept of self-determination.
By working together and sharing experiences, we're able to help each other move towards fuller recovery. Helping others not only benefits the person we're helping, but also benefits us. We believe that true recovery takes place when, as we help others in the recovery process, we lose sight of ourselves.
WHAT WE DO BEST:
We encourage self-help, mutual support, and community inclusion.
We provide information, referral services, and links to resources and benefits.
We give people a chance to be "well," to embrace recovery, and to live again.
WHAT WE OFFER:
Peer support and mentoring
Recreational activities and excursions
Self-help support groups
Recovery-oriented classes and workshops
Health and wellness programs
People come to MI-JOURNEY because it's a safe, supportive environment where they feel accepted. They visit for various reasons: to seek support from their peers, to participate in social activities, to receive help in obtaining services and benefits, or to simply relax and have fun.
BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATION:
WELL-BEING - Participation is directly related to increased feelings of well-being.
RECOVERY - When people see others "like them" living recovery, they see that recovery is both real and possible and a spark is kindled.
COMMUNITY BUILDING - Networks of natural support grow and the resulting relationships become the heart and soul of people getting better.
EMPOWERMENT - Participation increases people's capacity to make choices and to transform those choices into desired actions and outcomes.
