Each market features 10 regional artists, including one Emerging Artist vendor. Purchases made support the artists directly, and guests are encouraged to explore KAC’s sculpture and gallery exhibitions during their visit; Explore artwork in the galleries during your visit! In the Galleries, 'The Art of Elizabeth Catlett' presents a selection of the artist’s work from the collection of her student, fellow artist, educator, and lifelong friend Samella Lewis. Sculpture, art prints, and protest banners by Catlett tell the story of her life: her early arts education in the US, her move to Mexico and membership in Taller Gráfica Popular, her continual involvement with the Civil Rights movement in both countries, and the flow of influence between her and her peers; In The Lab, artist Theda Sandiford uses free-form weaving, coiling, knotting, and jewelry-making techniques to mold fiber and found materials into large, bold forms (both familiar and fantastical) like grocery carts, furniture, light fixtures, and tapestries. The materials are meticulously collected by the artist and donated from the community. They are transformed by their collective memory, becoming a “social fabric” that weaves together contemporary issues and personal narratives, particularly the artist’s own experiences with people touching or making comments about her hair.
