CKM was founded by educators and parents to provide an environment that invites curiosity, allows exploration, celebrates childhood and inspires learning!
Opened in 1989, the Museum on the Bluff has fulfilled the founders’ mission to provide a place where “Learning is Fun” through interactive, hands-on exhibits. In 2010, the Curious Kids’ Museum had the opportunity to expand and open a second location in partnership with the Silver Beach Carousel and Shadowland Ballroom, by opening DZ below the bluff.
With a shared mission and philosophy, both museums are places where children and their adults can pursue their natural curiosity through creative, hands-on play!

Finklepott's Fairy Hair
Howard Performing Arts Center
In February of 2001, John and Dede Howard, shared a generous gift with the intention of seeing a performing arts center constructed. The Howard Performing Arts Center, completed in 2003, sits at the end of the main entrance to the Andrews University campus. Each season, the Howard Center Presents... series features a combination of classical artists, Christian contemporary musicians, and other instrumental or world music acts. Hardly a weekend that goes by without 2-3 events happening at the Howard Center. The Department of Music's ensembles: Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and Choirs regularly have concerts that cost as little as $3 to attend.
Lake Effect Jazz Big Band
The Lake Effect Jazz Big Band was created in 2000 by Tom Weidle, a Herald-Palladium reporter, and Vito Tenerelli, a St. Joseph band instructor, who both wanted to create an "artistic" jazz ensemble, one that would read only the most state-of-the-art arrangements, and perform strictly as a "concert" jazz ensemble. Tom (since departed for sunny California) and Vito, our first music director, brought the dream to fruition in January 2001 recruiting 20 of the area's finest jazz musicians to play within its ranks.
The heart and soul of the Lake Effect Jazz Big Band are music educators from Southwest Michigan. The essence of Jazz is positive self-expression and without educators like those in the band, this American art form is in danger of fading.
